Saints Cristóbal Magallanes et ses 24 compagnons
Martyrs mexicains (+ 1927)

ST.
Martyr, priest; b. Jan.
29, 1881, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico; d. there, Jan. 30, 1915. Entered
Guadalajara's seminary at age 14, but he became disillusioned. A year later he
returned a new man. Even before his ordination (1909) he taught at
Guadalajara's seminary and continued thereafter. He was arrested, but later
released, during the Carrancista revolution for being a priest. Because of his
great love for the poor and for workers, he organized a workers union. Defender
of the sanctity of marriage, he helped a young woman pursued by a married
soldier by pretending to be her spouse. This act earned him the enmity of his
executioner. He and Araiza were arrested as they ministered to wounded soldiers
(Jan. 30, 1915) following a confrontation between Pancho Villa's supporters and
the Carrancistas. Lieutenant Colonel Enrique Vera ordered them shot. Fr. Galván
was both beatified (Nov. 22, 1992) and canonized (May 21, 2000) with Cristobal
magallanes [see guadalajara (mexico), martyrs of, ss.] by Pope John
Paul II.
Feast: May 25 (Mexico).

Saint David
Galván-Beremúdez
He was known for helping the poorest.
Priest and Martyr
(1881-1915)
His life
+ David was born in
Guadalajara, Mexico, and entered seminary in that city at the age of 14.
+ He left the seminary
for a period of three years and spent that time working and dating, living, it
would seem, a fairly dissolute life. At one point, he was arrested for hitting
his girlfriend while drunk.
+ Realizing that the
priesthood was, in fact, his true vocation, he entered a period of probation
and was allowed to return to seminary. He was ordained on May 20, 1909. He
later served as a teacher and superior of the seminary in Amatitán.
+ During a period of
anti-Catholic and anti-clerical sentiment, he was arrested for the “crime” of
being a priest. After his release, he provided pastoral care for those who were
injured in the violence, hearing confessions and binding the wounds of the injured.
+ As he was making his
way to Guadalajara to help victims of street fighting there, he was arrested
with another priest (who was later ransomed). Father David was shot by a firing
squad on January 30, 1915.
+ Saint David
Galván-Beremúdez was among a group of Mexican martyrs canonized in 2000.
Quote
“he Church in Mexico
rejoices at relying on these intercessors in heaven, models of supreme charity
who followed in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. They all dedicated their lives
to God and their brethren through martyrdom or by generously serving the needy.
The firmness of their faith and hope sustained them in the various trials they
had to endure.”—Pope Saint John Paul II at the canonization of Saint David and
the Martyrs of the Mexican Revolution
Prayer
O God, who were pleased
to give light to your Church by adorning blessed David with the victory of
martyrdom, graciously grant that, as he imitated the Lord’s Passion, so we may,
by following in his footsteps, be worthy to attain eternal joys. Through our Lord
Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Saint of the Day – 30
January – St David Galván Bermúdez (1881-1915) Martyr of the Mexican
Revolution, Priest, Lecturer, apostle of Charity. St David was born
on 29 January 1881 at Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and was
martyred by firing squad on 30 January 1915 at Guadalajara, Jalisco,
Mexico.
St David Galvan entered
the seminary in Guadalajara, Mexico at age 14. He was an excellent
student but during a period of discernment of his vocation, he left the
seminary for three years. He worked, dated, wasted his time and
lived a dissolute lifestyle; at one point he was arrested for hitting his
girlfriend while he was drunk.
However, he finally realised he could not ignore the call to his
vocation. After a year’s probation, he was allowed to return to the
seminary and was ordained on 20 May 1909. He was appointed as the Seminary
Superior and Lecturer at Amatitán Seminary.
During periods of armed rebellion, he went into the field of fire to work with
the injured, patching wounds and hearing confessions.
In 1914 he protected the
sanctity of marriage by assisting a single young lady who was being harassed by
a married man, a young lieutenant, Enrique Vera. Not long after
this incident, on Saturday 30 January 1915, violent clashes broke out in
Guadalajara between the opposing factions of the Villistas and
Carrancistas. Frs David Galván and José María Araiza, went to
assist the dying and wounded on the streets which had become a bloody
battlefield. On his way to minister to the wounded, he said, “What
greater glory is there than to die saving a soul?”
Whilst working with the injured and dying victims, they were intercepted by
Lieutenant Enrique Vera, who ordered their immediate arrest and without a
trial, they were condemned to the death penalty. A pardon saved the
life of Father Araiza but Galván would die by Firing Squad.
Whilst in prison, St
David comforted and assisted his fellow prisoners with prayer and
confessions. He refused to be blindfolded and, to his executioners,
he calmly pointed to his chest. He was shot by the firing squad on
30 January 1915 at Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
In June 1922 , his
remains were enshrined in a Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, near the place of
his martyrdom, in the Retiro neighbourhood. He was beatified the 22
November 1992 and canonised 21 May 2000 during the Jubilee of Mexico by St Pope
John Paul II.
