Stefan Wincenty
Frelichowski
1913-1945
1999.

MESSE DE BÉATIFICATION DE
DOM STEFAN WINCENTY FRELICHOWSKI
HOMÉLIE DU SAINT PÈRE
JEAN-PAUL II
7 juin 1999, Torun
(Pologne)
Charitativum, c'est-à-dire «Colloque fraternel».
s'adressant aux Apôtres, le Christ dit clairement: «Je vous laisse la paix;

APOSTOLIC JOURNEY TO
POLAND
BEATIFICATION OF FATHER
WINCENTY FRELICHOWSKI
HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS
JOHN PAUL II
Torun
Monday, 7 June 1999
1. “Heart of Jesus, our
peace and reconciliation, have mercy on us”
We bow in faith before
the great mystery of the love of the Divine Heart and we give it honour and
glory. Hail, O Jesus; hail, O Heart Divine of the Son of Man, which has so
loved us men and women.
I give thanks to God for
granting today that I should visit this young Diocese of Torun and that I
should, together with you, praise the Most Sacred Heart of the Saviour. With
joy I thank Divine Providence for the gift of a new Blessed, the priest and
martyr Stefan Wincenty Frelichowski, heroic witness to the love of which a
pastor is capable. I cordially greet all those present at this month of June
celebration. In a special way I greet Bishop Andrzej, Pastor of the Church of
Torun, his Auxiliary Jan, the clergy, consecrated men and women and all the
People of God in this land. I greet Torun, a city dear to my heart, and
beautiful Pomerania on the Vistula. I am pleased to be in your city made famous
by one of the world’s greatest astronomers, Nicolaus Copernicus. Torun is also
known because of the efforts for peace undertaken in the course of history. In
fact, on two occasions peace treaties were concluded here, treaties which
history has dubbed the Peace of Torun. It was also in this city that there took
place the meeting of Catholic, Lutheran and Calvinist representatives which
received the name Colloquium Charitativum, that is, the “Fraternal Colloquium”.
Here the words of the Psalmist take on a particular eloquence: “For my brethren
and companions’ sake I will say, 'Peace be within you!' For the sake of the
house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good” (Ps 122, 8-9).
2. “Heart of Jesus, our
peace and reconciliation”
This is the Heart of the
Saviour — the tangible sign of his invincible love and the inexhaustible source
of true peace. In him “the whole fulness of deity dwells bodily” (Col 2:9). The
peace that Christ brought to earth comes precisely from this Fulness and from
this Love. It is the gift of a God who loves, who has loved mankind in the
Heart of the Only-Begotten Son. “He is our peace” (cf. Eph 2:14), exclaims
Saint Paul. Yes, Jesus is peace, he is our reconciliation. He was the one who
put an end to the enmity which arose after man had sinned, and who reconciled
all people with the Father through his Death on the Cross. On Golgotha Jesus’
Heart was pierced by a lance as a sign of his total self-giving, of that
sacrificial and saving love with which he “loved us to the end” (cf. Jn 13:1),
laying the foundation of the friendship between God and man.
This is why the peace of
Christ is different from the peace envisaged by the world. In the Upper Room
before his Death, speaking to the Apostles, Jesus stated clearly: “Peace I
leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to
you” (Jn 14:27). While men understand peace primarily at the temporal and
external level, Christ says that it springs from supernatural gifts, it is the
result of union with God in love.
The Church lives
ceaselessly by the Gospel of peace. She proclaims it to all peoples and
nations. Tirelessly she indicates the paths of peace and reconciliation. She
ushers in peace by breaking down the walls of prejudice and hostility between
people. She does this first of all through the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation:
bringing the grace of divine mercy and of forgiveness, she arrives at the very
roots of human suffering, she heals consciences wounded by sin so that the
person experiences inner comfort and becomes a peacemaker. The Church also
shares the peace that she herself experiences every day in the Eucharist. The
Eucharist is the culmination of our peace. In it is accomplished the sacrifice
of reconciliation with God and with our brothers and sisters, in it resounds
the word of God announcing peace, in it is raised without end the prayer: “Lamb
of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us”. In the
Eucharist we receive the gift of Christ himself, who offers himself and becomes
our peace. So, with particular clarity we experience the fact that the world
cannot give this peace, for it does not know this peace (cf. Jn 14:27).
We praise today the peace
of our Lord Jesus Christ; the peace that he gave to all those who met him
during his earthly life. The peace with which he joyously greeted the disciples
after his Resurrection.
3. “Blessed are the
peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Mt 5:9).
This is what Christ tells
us in the Sermon on the Mount. From the depths of his Heart filled with love he
expresses his desire for our happiness. Christ knows that our greatest
happiness is union with God, which makes us sons and daughters of God. Among
the paths that lead to fulness of happiness, he indicates the one that involves
working on behalf of peace and sharing peace with others. Men and women of
peace are worthy of being called children of God. Jesus calls such people
“blessed”.
“Blessed are the
peacemakers”. The dignity of such a designation rightly belongs to Father
Stefan Wincenty Frelichowsky, raised today to the glory of the altars. His
whole life, in fact, is a kind of mirror reflecting the light of that teaching
of Christ according to which true happiness is attained only by those who, in
union with God, become men and women of peace, peacemakers who bring peace to
others. This priest of Torun, whose pastoral service lasted less than eight
years, offered a very clear witness of his giving himself to God and to others.
Drawing his sustenance from God, from the very first years of his priesthood,
with the wealth of his priestly charism he went wherever the grace of salvation
needed to be brought. He learned the secrets of the human heart and adapted
pastoral methods to the needs of every person he met. He had picked up this
ability from the school of Scouting where he had acquired a particular
sensitivity to the needs of others, a sensitivity which he constantly developed
in the spirit of the parable of the Good Shepherd who searches out the lost
sheep and is ready to give his own life to save them (cf. Jn 10:1-21). As a
priest he was always aware of being a witness of a great Cause, and at the same
time he gave himself with deep humility to the service of others. Thanks to his
goodness, meekness and patience he won many souls over to Christ, even in the
tragic circumstances of the War and the Occupation.
During the tragedy of the
war his life was like a written record, one chapter following another, of
service on behalf of peace. The so-called Fort Seven, then Stutthoff,
Grenzdorf, Oranienburgo-Sachsenhausen, and finally Dachau are the list of
stations on a path of suffering, but a path on which he was always the same:
courageous in fulfilling his priestly ministry. He would minister especially to
those who were most in need of his services, to those who were part of the
masses dying of typhoid, to which he himself fell victim. He gave his priestly
life to God and to others, bringing peace to the victims of war. He generously
shared peace with others because his soul drew strength from the peace of
Christ. And that strength was so great that not even death as a martyr was able
to crush it.
4. Dear Brothers and
Sisters, without inner renewal and without a commitment to overcome evil and
sin in our hearts, and especially without love, man will never achieve inner
peace. Such peace will be lasting only when it is rooted in the highest values,
when it is based on moral norms and is open to God. Otherwise, when built on
the shifting sands of religious indifference and arid pragmatism, it can only
be short-lived. Inner peace comes to birth in the human heart and in the life
of society as a result of moral order, ethical order, the observance of God’s
commandments.
Let us share this peace
of God with others, as did the Blessed priest and martyr Wincenty Frelichowsky.
Thus we will become a source of peace in the world, in society, in the
environment in which we live and work. I make this appeal to everyone without
exception, and particularly to you, dear priests. Be witnesses of God’s
merciful love! Proclaim joyfully the Gospel of Christ, dispensing God’s
forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Through your service seek to
bring everyone closer to Christ, the giver of peace.
I also address these
words to you, dear parents, who are the first educators of your children. Be
for them an image of love and divine forgiveness, striving with all your might
to build a united and harmonious family. In fact, it is the family that has
been entrusted with a mission of primary importance: to participate in the
building of peace, of the well-being that is indispensable for development and
for the respect of human life.
I ask you, educators, who
are called to impart authentic life values to the younger generations: teach
children and young people tolerance, understanding and respect for every human
being; educate the younger generations in a climate of true peace. It is their
right. It is your duty.
You, young people, who
cherish great hopes in your hearts, learn to live in harmony and mutual
respect, lending assistance by your solidarity with others. Sustain in your
hearts the aspiration to good works and the desire for peace (cf. Message for
the 1997 World Day of Peace, 8).
Societies and nations
need men and women of peace, authentic sowers of harmony and mutual respect;
men and women who fill their own hearts with Christ’s peace and bring this
peace to their homes, offices, institutions, workplaces, to the entire world.
Both history and the events of our own day show that the world cannot give
peace. The world is powerless. That is why it is necessary to point to Jesus
Christ, who by his Death on the Cross has left his peace to mankind, assuring
us of his presence for all times (cf. Jn 14:7-31). How much innocent blood has
been shed in the Twentieth Century, in Europe and throughout the world, because
certain political and social systems forsook the principles of Christ that
guarantee a just peace. How much innocent blood is being shed under our very
eyes. These last few months have demonstrated this in a tragic way. We are
witnesses to how strongly people cry out for and yearn for peace.
I speak these words in a
land that in its history experienced the tragic effects of the lack of peace,
having been victim of a cruel and ruinous war. Our memory of the Second World
War is still vivid, the wounds inflicted by that cataclysm of history will need
much time to be completely healed. May the cry for peace spread out from this
place to the entire world! I wish to repeat the words I spoke this year in the
Easter Urbi et Orbi message: “Peace is possible, peace is a duty, peace is a
prime responsibility of everyone! May the dawn of the Third Millennium see the
coming of a new era in which respect for every man and woman and fraternal
solidarity among peoples will, with God’s help, overcome the culture of hatred,
of violence, of death”.
With deep gratitude we
welcome the witness of the life of Blessed Wincenty Frelichowski — a modern-day
hero, priest and man of peace — as a call to our generation. I wish to entrust
the gift of this Beatification in a particular way to the Church in Torun, so
that she may preserve and make known on an ever wider scale the memory of the
great works which God accomplished in the short life of this priest. I entrust
this gift above all to the priests of this Diocese and of all Poland. Father
Frelichowski, at the beginning of his priestly journey, wrote: “I must be a
priest after the Heart of Christ”. If this Beatification is a great act of
thanksgiving to God for his priesthood, it is also an act of praise to God for
the marvels of grace which are accomplished through the hands of all priests,
through your hands too. I wish to address a few words also to the family of
Polish scouts, with whom the Blessed shared a profound bond. May he become your
Patron, teaching you nobility of spirit and interceding for peace and
reconciliation.
In just a few days it
will be the hundredth anniversary of the consecration of humanity to the Most
Sacred Heart of Jesus. This took place in all Dioceses through the work of Pope
Leo XIII, who, to that end, published the Encyclical Annum Sacrum. In that
Encylical he wrote: “The Divine Heart is the symbol and living image of Jesus
Christ’s infinite love, which invites us to respond in turn with love” (No. 2).
A little while ago we renewed together the act of consecration to the Most
Sacred Heart of Jesus. We thus expressed our utmost homage and our faith in
Christ, the Redeemer of mankind. He is “the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning
and the end” (Rev 21:6), to him belong this world and its destiny.
Today, in adoring the
Sacred Heart, let us pray fervently for peace. First of all for peace in our
hearts, but also for peace in our families, in our nation and in all the world.
Heart of Jesus, our peace
and reconciliation, have mercy on us!

FRELICHOWSKI, STEFAN
WINCENTY, BL.
Diocesan priest, martyr;
b. Jan. 22, 1913, Chelmza, Poland; d. Feb. 23, 1945 in the concentration
camp at Dachau (near Munich), Germany. As a Polish Scout prior to his entry
into the seminary, Stefan "acquired a particular sensitivity to the needs
of others" (John
Paul II, beatification homily). He was ordained a priest in 1937. He was
working at his first assignment as a parish priest at Torun when he was
arrested with several other priests by the Gestapo and released after a few
days. On Oct. 18, 1939, he was again stopped and sent to Oranienburg–Sachsenhausen.
Over the course of the next 14 months, he was transferred successively to
"Fort Seven," Stutthof, Grenzdorf, Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen, and
finally Dachau (Dec. 13, 1940). At each stop along the way, Frelichowski
witnessed to the love of Christ through his humble service to others. During
the typhus epidemics at Dachau (1944–45), he risked his life to bring forbidden
material and spiritual comfort to the afflicted and dying until he himself
contracted the disease, then developed pneumonia. He died in the camp hospital
at age 32—just two months before the end of the war. The decree of
Frelichowski's martyrdom was signed on March 26, 1999. Pope John
Paul II beatified Frelichowski on June 7, 1999 at Torun, Poland, the city
where two peace treaties were signed and a colloquium was held between
Catholics and Calvinists, because he was a peacemaker.

Frelichowski
Bl. Stefan Wincenty Frelichowski was born on 22 January 1913 in Chełmza to LudwikFrelichowski,
a baker, and Marta Olszewska. After finishing his secondary studies, he decided
to enter the diocesan seminary in Pelplin, where he was known for his serenity,
modesty and devotion to the Sacred Heart. He wrote in his diary: "On
the first Friday of the month I began the novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
with the intention of receiving a clear and ardent vocation. During the nine
first Fridays I want to ask Jesus for a heart that loves him ardently, a
priestly heart. Jesus, you said to St Margaret that you would not refuse the
request of anyone who receives Holy Communion on nine first Fridays of the
month. Jesus, who said: 'Ask and you shall receive', I ask you to give me the
grace of a clear and ardent vocation".
He was ordained in
Pelplin on 14 March 1937 and appointed secretary to the Bishop. The following
year he was sent as a curate to St Mary's Parish in Torun. He threw himself
into all the parish activities and also served as Scout chaplain. He was known
as a fervent and faith-filled pastor of souls.
On 7 September 1939 the
German army occupied Torun. Four days later all the priests at St Mary's Parish
were arrested and imprisoned. All were released the following day except Fr
Frelichowski, who was sent successively to the concentration camps of Stuthoff,
Sachsenhausen and Dachau. In each of them he devoted himself to clandestine pastoral
work and gave spiritual guidance to al the prisoners.
In 1945 he decided
secretly to aid the camp's typhus victims, who were isolated and without any
assistance. As a Good Samaritan and priest he brought them whatever food or
medicine he could find and heard confessions in Polish, French and German. He
eventually contracted the disease and died on 23 February 1945 at the age of
32. For the first time ever, the camp authorities gave permission for his body
to be shown to the public. An eyewitness recalls: "The crowd of prisoners
moved through the morgue in silence and prayerful recollection. Young and old
came, Poles and foreigners. Everyone knew him. At that moment so many intense
prayers were offered to the Creator for him, so many tears rolled down cheeks.
He departed as a beloved and holy priest. It was the death of someone who had
sacrificed his life on the altar of love and mercy for others".

Bl. Stefan Wincenty
Frelichowski
Memorial: February 23
Today’s saint is yet
another Pole martyred by the Nazis. One could almost say his priestly ministry
was carried out in German concentration camps. For three years, he was a free
priest. He passed the remaining six years of his life as a prisoner.
Stefan Wincenty
Frelichowski was born January 22, 1913, in Chełmży, Poland, a small town in the
northern central part of the country. He was one of six children—three boys,
three girls—all of whom grew up around the family bakery and pastry shop run by
their father Louis Frelichowski.
All throughout his
boyhood and teen years, he participated in Boy Scouts activities and served as
an altar boy. Following his high school graduation, he entered the major
seminary of the Diocese of Chełmno, based in Pelplin. During seminary he took
an active role with the charitable organization Caritas and helped leading
scouting activities for the local youth. He continued his involvement with the
Boy Scouts even after his ordination.
Ordained on March 4,
1937, he was assigned to be Bishop Stanisław W. Okoniewski’s secretary. Then a
little more than a year later, July 1, 1938, the bishop made him vicar of
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Toruniu. There he zealously
devoted himself to pastoral activity. Afterward people recall he celebrated the
Mass with a fervor that surprised many.
It was at the height of
his parish ministry that Nazi Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Ten
days later, on September 11, the Germans arrested him and other area priests
and sent them to jail. Although released after a few days, he was again
imprisoned on October 18, and this marked the definitive loss of his freedom.
No charges were ever brought against him.
At first, the Nazis held
him at Fort VII, a 19th century military installation near Toruniu. While
imprisoned here, he strove to raise the morale of his fellow prisoners by
strengthening their faith. Then there came a very brief stay in the town of
Nowym Porcie (New Port), where he worked at cleaning up the devastation of war
at Westerplatte peninsula in Gdańsk (this is where the Germans opened the
battle to conquer Poland). The Nazis next moved him on January 10, to the
concentration camp at Stutthof near Gdańsk, where he was used to work
in the local mines. This is the same camp in which Bl. Julia Rodzińska, OP, would later be held
and die.
Here, too, he ministered
to his fellow prisoners. Somehow he clandestinely procured unconsecrated
Communion hosts and some wine and—despite the threat of reprisals, and in very
humble conditions—he celebrated the Mass of Holy Thursday in 1940. He also
managed to organize times of common prayer, both in the morning and evening, in
honor of Our Lady of the Afflicted.
Three weeks later, on
April 9, 1940, the Germans transferred him to the Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg
camp near Berlin. Here he was quarantined in Block 20, run by a kapo and war
Hugo Krey, a war criminal known for his cruelty. One inmate remarked, “But a
hundred times worse is the block of priests from across the way, [run by bloody
Hugo]. Hugo is a monster in human flesh.” He beat the
Servant of God Fr. Roman Kozubek, SVD (d. May 16, 1940) so badly that the
bespectacled priest died. Kozubek was transferred from Stutthof to this camp on
the same day as Fr. Frelichowski.
Frelichowski—with all the
ardor of the young clergyman that he was—continued to discreetly minister to
the sick, the elderly, and young people, finding for all words of consolation
and hope, trying to strengthen the weakest, and helping all bear with dignity
the humiliations and persecutions that the bloody kapo inflicted on them.
On December 13, 1940, he
was again transferred, this time to Dachau with all the other priests in camp.
This was where the Nazis concentrated the clergy they had imprisoned from all
over Europe, especially the Poles. During his remaining years, he continued to
do what he could to exercise his priesthood.
Father had a chance to
make things better for himself. All he had to do was sign the so-called Volksliste. This was an
invention of SS chief Heinrich Himmler. It gave Poles—mainly those of German
ethnicity or ancestry but also those who were deemed valuable by the Nazis for
some reason—a chance to identify as Germans. It was tantamount to renouncing
one’s Polish nationality.
He refused to sign. Had
he done so, he would have enjoyed improved living conditions. Because he
refused, he became subject to cruel retaliation. He ended up in the camp
hospital. True to his spirit, perhaps, he spent his convalescence giving
spiritual assistance to the sick and the many others who were dying.
Around 1943-44, prisoners
experienced a slight improvement in their treatment. They gained the ability to
receive food parcels from the families, and it was in this way that the young
priest obtained Communion wafers and wine with which he celebrated Mass in the
various blocks. He also he persuaded other inmates to give up some of their
gifts. This enabled him to organize a distribution of food to those who did not
receive anything.
In late 1944, however, a typhus epidemic broke out due
to the poor sanitary conditions. The camp authorities did not even try to fight
it. Conditions got so bad the Germans separated entire prisoner blocks by
barbed wire, and the sick were left in inhumane conditions.
Father was nonetheless
able to communicate with them and bring them a few pieces of bread and as well
as the comfort of faith to the dying. He did this despite the calls of his
peers to protect himself, to not to risk the contagion, which he nonetheless
acquired via his generosity.
Along with typhus he also
contracted pneumonia. This one-two punch did him in, and he died at just 32
years old on February 23, 1945, only a few weeks before Dachau’s liberation. He
was among the last of all the internees to die.
Although it was a
violation of camp regulations, authorities agreed to allow a public viewing of
Fr. Frelichowski corpse in a coffin that was lined with a white sheet and
decorated with flowers. Before the body was cremated, a prisoner named
Stanisław Bieniek, who had studied medicine before the war, made a death mask
from Father’s face. He also made a plaster cast of one of the fingers of his
right hand.
Because of this, Father
is the only Polish martyr of World War II killed in a concentration camp for
whom relics have been preserved.
Pope St. John Paul II
beatified him on June 7, 1999 in Toruniu during the Pontiff’s seventh apostolic
journey to Poland.
Two weeks later on June
20, 1999 the Supreme Council of the Scouting Association of the Republic of
Poland adopted a resolution declaring of Bl. Stephen Vincent Frelichowski the
patron saint of Polish Scouting. The Vatican later approved the designation.

Beato Wincenty Stefan
Frelichowski Sacerdote, martire
23
febbraio
Chelmza (Polonia), 22
gennaio 1913 – Dachau, 23 febbraio 1945
Seconda guerra mondiale, venne arrestato. Subito liberato fu nuovamente
Martirologio Romano: Nel
Wincenty Stefan
– Sachsenhausen vicino Berlino; vennero sistemati inizialmente in ‘quarantena’

VIAGGIO APOSTOLICO IN
POLONIA (5-17 GIUGNO 1999)
ATTO DI DEVOZIONE AL
SACRO CUORE DI GESÙ
E BEATIFICAZIONE DEL VEN. P. FRELICHOWSKI
OMELIA DI GIOVANNI PAOLO
II
Spianata dell'Aeroclub
(Toruń)
Domenica, 7 giugno 1999
Rendo grazie a Dio perché
Saluto in
Cuore dell’unigenito Figlio. “Egli è la nostra pace” (cfr Fil 2, 14) - esclama
San Paolo.
pace, vi do la mia pace.
L’annunzia a tutti i popoli e a tutte
Apprendeva i segreti dell’animo umano e adattava i
a Dio.
senza alcuna eccezione, e in modo particolare a voi, cari sacerdoti. Siate
Famiglia, proprio a te è
Chiedo a voi, educatori,
Scrisse in essa: “Il
Poc’anzi abbiamo
In

A 18 anni entrò in
Seminario e venne ordinato sacerdote il 4 marzo 1937. L'anno seguente venne
a Dio e agli uomini.
Apprendeva i segreti
(cfr Gv 10, 1-21).
Come sacerdote sempre

i hans prestegjerning.
sekretær for biskopen.
i Polen. Hans minnedag er 22. februar.

APOSTOLISCHE REISE NACH
POLEN (5. -17. JUNI 1999)
HERZ-JESU-ANDACHT UND
SELIGSPRECHUNG VON P. STEFAN WINCENTY FRELICHOWSKY
PREDIGT VON JOHANNES PAUL
II.
Thorn (Toruń), 7. Juni
1999
1. »Herz Jesu, unser
Herrn, unseres Gottes, will ich dir Glück erflehen« (Ps 122,8-9).
2. »Herz Jesu, unser
Menschen in tiefer Demut.
Mensch keinen inneren Frieden finden.
Seid
Frieden in eurem Herzen (vgl. Botschaft
an.
»Herz Jesu, unser Friede
und unsere Versöhnung, erbarme dich unser«!

(5-17 DE JUNIO DE 1999)
SOLEMNE CEREMONIA DE
BEATIFICACIÓN
HOMILÍA DEL SANTO PADRE
JUAN PABLO II
Torun, lunes 7 de junio
1999
Saludo cordialmente a
Me alegra haber podido
profunda humildad.

BEATIFICAÇÃO DO SERVO DE DEUS WINCENTY FRELICHOWSKI
HOMILIA DO SANTO PADRE
Torun, 7 de junho
de 1999
hoje me é concedido visitar a jovem Diocese de Torun e louvar, juntamente
convosco, o Sacratíssimo Coração do Salvador. Agradeço com alegria à Divina
Providência o dom dum novo beato, o sacerdote e mártir Stefan Wincenty
Frelichowski, testemunha heróica do amor do qual um pastor é capaz.
Sinto-me
eloquência particular as palavras do Salmista: «Por amor dos meus irmãos e dos
meus amigos exclamarei: 'a paz esteja contigo'. Por amor da casa do Senhor,
nosso Deus, exclamarei: 'o bem esteja contigo'» (Sl 121 [122], 8-9).
2. «Coração de Jesus,
nossa paz e reconciliação».
Eis o Coração do Redentor
― sinal do seu amor invencível e fonte inexaurível duma verdadeira paz. N'Ele
«habita corporalmente toda a plenitude da divindade» (Col 2, 9). A paz trazida
«Ele é a nossa
paz» (cf. Fl 2, 14) ― exclama São Paulo. Sim, Jesus é a paz, é a nossa
No
A Igreja vive
Eucaristia.
Deus. Jesus chama bem-aventuradas as pessoas deste género.
«Bem-aventurados os
pacificadores». É justamente digno desta qualificação o Pe. Stefan Wincenty
Levava-o
Sede testemunhas do
Peço a vós, educadores,
direito delas.
As sociedades e as nações
almejada paz.
Quero repetir as palavras
que pronunciei na Mensagem
Pascal Urbi et Orbi: «A paz é possível, a paz é obrigatória, a paz é
responsabilidade primária de todos! Possa a aurora do terceiro milénio ver o
toda a Polónia. O Pe.
Desejo dirigir-me a toda a
família dos escuteiros polacos, à qual o novo beato estava profundamente
ligado.
Desta forma, exprimimos a

VIAGGIO APOSTOLICO IN
POLONIA (5-17 GUGNO 1999)
ATTO DI DEVOZIONE AL
SACRO CUORE DI GESÙ
E BEATIFICAZIONE DEL VEN. P. FRELICHOWSKI
OMELIA DI GIOVANNI PAOLO
II
Spianata dell'Aeroclub
(Toruń) - Lunedì, 7 giugno 1999
1.« Serce Jezusa, pokoju
i pojednanie nasze, zmiłuj się nad nami ».
Pochylamy się z wiarą
przed wielką tajemnicą miłości Boskiego Serca i pragniemy oddać Mu cześć i
błogosławionego, kapłana i męczennika Stefana Wincentego Frelichowskiego,
heroicznego świadka miłości pasterskiej. Pozdrawiam serdecznie wszystkich
zgromadzonych na tym nabożeństwie czerwcowym. W szczególny sposób pozdrawiam
księdza biskupa Andrzeja pasterza Kościoła toruńskiego, biskupa pomocniczego,
całe duchowieństwo, osoby konsekrowane i cały Lud Boży tej ziemi. Pozdrawiam
bliski mojemu sercu Toruń i piękne Pomorze nadwiślańskie.
To
właśnie tutaj doszło do dwukrotnego zawarcia traktatów pokojowych, które
otrzymały w historii miano Pokoju Toruńskiego. W tym mieście również miało
miejsce spotkanie przedstawicieli katolików, luteranów i kalwinistów z całej
Europy, które otrzymało nazwę Colloquium Charitativum, czyli « Rozmowa
Braterska ». Szczególnej wymowy nabierają tu słowa psalmisty: «Przez wzgląd na
moich braci i przyjaciół będę mówił: Pokój w tobie!
2. « Serce Jezusa,
pokoju i pojednanie nasze ».
Oto Serce Odkupiciela
czytelny znak Jego miłości i niewyczerpane źródło prawdziwego pokoju. W Nim «
Syna.
« On jest naszym pokojem
» (Po. Ef 2, 14) woła św. Paweł. Tak, Jezus jest pokojem, jest naszym
pojednaniem. To On zburzył wrogość, jaka powstała po grzechu człowieka i
ofiarnej, zbawczej, którą e do końca nas umiłował », budując (Por J 13, 1)
fundament pod przyjaźń Boga z ludźmi.
Oto dlaczego pokój
Chrystusa jest inny niż ten, jaki wyobraża sobie świat. Zwracając się do
Apostołów w wieczerniku przed swoją męką i śmiercią, Chrystus powiedział
wyraźnie: « Pokój zostawiam wam, pokój mój daję wam. Nie tak jak daje świat, Ja
wam daję » (J 14, 27). Podczas gdy ludzie rozumieli pokój przede wszystkim na
płaszczyźnie doczesnej i zewnętrznej, Chrystus mówi, że wypływa on z porządku
Głosi ją wszystkim ludom i narodom. Niestrudzenie ukazuje
drogi pokoju i pojednania. Wprowadza pokój, burząc mury uprzedzeń i wrogości
między ludźmi. Czyni to przede wszystkim przez sakrament pokuty i pojednania,
niosąc łaskę Bożego miłosierdzia i przebaczenia, dociera do samych korzeni
naszego Pana Jezusa Chrystusa; pokój, jakiego On udzielił tym wszystkim, którzy
z Nim zetknęli się w czasie Jego ziemskiego życia. Pokój, którym radośnie
pozdrowił uczniów po swoim zmartwychwstaniu (Mt 5, 9).
wyniesionemu dziś do chwały ołtarzy ks. Stefanowi Wincentemu Frelichowskiemu.
osiem lat, dał czytelne świadectwo swego oddania Bogu i ludziom. Żyjąc Bogiem,
od pierwszych lat kapłaństwa szedł z bogactwem swojego kapłańskiego charyzmatu
wszędzie tam, gdzie trzeba było nieść łaskę zbawienia. Uczył się tajników
ludzkiej duszy i dostosowywał metody duszpasterskie do potrzeb każdego
spotkanego człowieka. Tę sprawność wyniósł z harcerskiej szkoły wrażliwości na
potrzeby innych i stale ją rozwijał w duchu przypowieści o dobrym pasterzu,
a równocześnie z głęboką pokorą służył ludziom. Dzięki dobroci, łagodności i
wojny i okupacji.
W dramat wojny niejako
wpisywał kolejne rozdziały posługi pokoju. Tak zwany Fort VII, Stutthof,
Grenzdorf, Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen, wreszcie Dachau to kolejne stacje jego
drogi krzyżowej, na której pozostawał zawsze taki sam: nieustraszony w
pełnieniu kapłańskiej posługi. Szedł z nią zwłaszcza do tych, którzy jej
najbardziej potrzebowali do umierających masowo na tyfus, którego w końcu sam
padł ofiarą. Oddał swoje kapłańskie życie Bogu i ludziom, niosąc pokój ofiarom
wojny.
4. Drodzy bracia i
siostry, bez wewnętrznej odnowy i bez pokonania zła i grzechu w sercu, a
pragmatyzmu. Rodzi się on w sercu ludzkim i w życiu społeczeństwa z ładu
Frelichowski. W ten sposób staniemy się zaczynem pokoju w świecie, w
społeczeństwie, w środowisku, w którym żyjemy i pracujemy. Zwracam się z tym
apelem do wszystkich bez wyjątku, a zwłaszcza do was, drodzy kapłani. Bądźcie
świadkami miłosiernej miłości Boga. Głoście z radością Ewangelię Chrystusa,
rozdając Boże przebaczenie w sakramencie pojednania. Przez swoją posługę
starajcie się przybliżać każdego do Chrystusa Dawcy pokoju (Por. Orędzie na
Światowy Dzień Pokoju, 1 stycznia 1997, n.8).
Kieruję te słowa również
do was, drodzy rodzice, którzy jesteście pierwszymi wychowawcami waszych
dzieci.
wszystkich sił budować rodzinę zjednoczoną i solidarną. Rodzino, to właśnie
ludzkiego.
Proszę was, wychowawcy,
którzy jesteście powołani, aby wpajać młodemu pokoleniu autentyczne wartości
życia: uczcie dzieci i młodzież tolerancji, zrozumienia i szacunku dla każdego
człowieka. Wychowujcie młode pokolenie w klimacie prawdziwego pokoju. To jest
ich prawem. To jest waszym obowiązkiem.
Wy, młodzi, którzy
nosicie w sercach wielkie aspiracje, uczcie się żyć w zgodzie i wzajemnym
poszanowaniu. solidarnie pomagając jedni drugim. Podtrzymujcie w waszych
sercach dążenie do dobra i pragnienie pokoju.
Społeczeństwa i narody
potrzebują ludzi pokoju. prawdziwych siewców zgody i wzajemnego poszanowania.
Ludzi, którzy wypełnią swoje serca pokojem Chrystusowym i poniosą go innym, poniosą
go do domów, urzędów i instytucji. miejsc pracy, na cały świat. Historia i
J 14, 27-31).
Tragiczne wydarzenia w Kosowie pokazały i pokazują to w sposób jakże bolesny.
przemocy i śmierci ».
toruńskiemu, ażeby strzegł i rozszerzał pa-mięć wielkich dzieł Boga, jakie
dokonały się w krótkim życiu tego kapłana. Zawierzam ten dar nade wszystko
kapłanom tej diecezji i całej Polski. Ks.
i orędownikiem pokoju i pojednania.
On jest « Alfą i Omegą, Początkiem i Końcem (Por. Ap.
21, 6), do Niego należy ten świat i jego losy.
Dzisiaj, kiedy oddajemy
cześć, Jego Najświętszemu Sercu, módlmy się gorąco o pokój. Przede wszystkim o
Serce Jezusa, pokoju i
pojednanie nasze zmiłuj się nad nami!
