dominicain et fut emprisonné à plusieurs reprises à cause de sa foi. Les juges
essayèrent en vain de la lui faire renier. A l'âge de 80 ans, il fut arrêté une
fois de plus lors de la persécution de l’empereur Tu Duc, et sommé de fouler la
croix du Christ. Il s'inclina devant la croix et eut la tête tranchée d’un coup
de hache en 1860.

Au Tonkin, en 1860, saint
Thomas Khuong, prêtre et martyr. Dans la persécution de l’empereur Tu Duc, il
se déclara chrétien avec un courage invincible, fut mis en prison et,
agenouillé devant la croix, fut tué d’un coup de hache.

L'ÉGLISE AU VIETNAM
FÉCONDÉE PAR LE SANG DES MARTYRS
L'oeuvre de
l'évangélisation, entreprise dès le début, du XVIème siècle, puis établie dans
les deux premiers Vicariats Apostoliques du Nord (Dâng-Ngoâi) et du Sud
(Dâng-Trong) en 1659, a connu au cours des siècles un admirable développement.
A l'heure actuelle, les Diocèses sont au nombre de 25 (10 au Nord, 6 au Centre
et 9 au Sud). Les catholiques sont environ 6 millions (presque 10% de la
population). La hiérarchie catholique vietnamienne a été érigée par le Pape
Jean XXIII le 24 novembre 1960.
Ce résultat est dû aussi
au fait que, dès les premières années de l'évangélisation, la semence de la Foi
a été mêlée sur la terre vietnamienne au sang abondamment versé des Martyrs,
tant du clergé missionnaire que du clergé local et du peuple chrétien du
Viêt-Nam. Tous ont supporté ensemble les fatigues de l'œuvre apostolique et ont
d'un même cœur affronté aussi la mort pour rendre témoignage à la vérité
évangélique. L'histoire religieuse de l'Eglise du Viêt-Nam enregistre qu'il y a
eu en tout 53 Décrets, signés par les Seigneurs TRINH et NGUYEN et par les
Empereurs qui, pendant trois siècles XVIIème, XVIIIème, XIXème: exactement 261
ans (16251886), ont promulgué contre les chrétiens des persécutions l'une plus
violente que l'autre. On compte environ 130.000 victimes tombées un peu partout
sur le territoire du Viêt-Nam.
Au cours des siècles, ces
Martyrs de la Foi ont été ensevelis d'une manière anonyme, mais leur mémoire
est restée toujours vivante dans l'esprit de la communauté catholique.

siècle, dans cette foule de héros, 117 personnes - dont les épreuves sont
apparues les plus cruelles - ont été choisies et élevées aux honneurs des
autels par le Saint-Siège en 4 séries de Béatifications:

Born to the Tonkinese nobility,
he was raised in a Christian home. Priest in
the apostolic vicariate of Central Tonkin (modern Vietnam).
Member of the Dominican Fraternity
of Priests,
and a tertiary. Imprisoned several
times in the persecutions of
Minh-Manh, but released. Arrested on 29 December 1859 in
Tran Xa in the persecutions of
Tu Ðuc. When he was ordered to stomp on a cross to show his refutation of Christianity,
he instead kneeled and began to pray. Martyr.

Dominican Tertiary
Thomas Khuông belonged to
a noble family on Tokin and was a well son of a Mandarin. A Christian
since childhood, he became a Dominican Tertiary. He was imprisoned many times
because of his faith. When he was in his 80`s in 1859, He was arrested again.
The judge triedin vain to make him trample on the crucifix and invited him in
vain to prusuade his Christian followers to apostilate but he firmly replied
"to redeem mankind, Christ voluntarily suffered death. . .I too, want to
give love for love, spilling all may blood for him. While he was genuflecting
to adore crucifix his head was cut off, it was the 30th of January 1860.

Today is the day set aside for all the martyrs of Vietnam in the last 500 years.
Even though 117 martyrs are named, there are over 100,000 up to the present day
to be included. Dominicans, of course, are among the many from the Church's
various orders that were martyred.

It is often quoted, "The earliest martyrs mentioned in written sources are
the Spanish Dominicans Francisco Gil de Federich and Matthew Alonzo Lenziana,
who arrived in the country about 1580." However, this information is
very likely incorrect since most other sources place Francisco Gil de Federich
in the mid-18th century.
The tortures these individuals underwent were among the worst in the history of
Christian martyrdom. The means included cutting off limbs joint by joint,
ripping living bodies with red hot tongs, and use of drugs to enslave the minds
of the victims. Christians at the time were branded on the face with the
words ta dao (false religion) and families and villages which
subscribed to Christianity were obliterated.
The 117 martyrs were beatified in four groups, the first of them on 27 May 1900
(Pope Leo XIII), the second (all Dominicans) on 20 May 1906, a third
on 2 May 1909 (both by Pope Pius X) and the last (including two Spanish
bishops) on 29 April 1951 (Pope Pius XII). They were canonised in Rome on 19
June 1988 by Pope John Paul II.

Apparteneva a una nobile
famiglia Tonchinese, e forse era figlio di un mandarino. Cristiano fin da
piccolo, divenne poi sacerdote e terziario domenicano. Fu incarcerato più volte
a causa della sua fede. Quando ormai era già ottantenne, nel 1859, fu arrestato
una seconda volta. Il giudice tentò invano di fargli calpestare il Crocifisso e
lo invitò invano a persuadere i suoi cristiani ad apostatare, ma egli rispose
fermamente: "Per redimere l'uomo, Gesù Cristo soffrì volontariamente la
morte, anch'io voglio rendergli amore per amore, versando tutto il mio sangue
per lui". Mentre si genufletteva per adorare la croce, gli fu troncata la
testa: era il 30 gennaio 1860.

Romano: Nel Tonchino, ora Viet Nam, san Tommaso Khuông, sacerdote e
martire, che, durante la persecuzione dell’imperatore Tự Đức, avendo professato
con invitto animo di essere cristiano, fu messo in prigione e, in ginocchio
davanti alla croce, fu ucciso a colpi di scure.
Il 19 giugno 1988 papa
Giovanni Paolo II ha canonizzato un numeroso gruppo di martiri del Tonchino
(Vietnam), essi in numero di 117, fra cui 8 vescovi, 50 sacerdoti e religiosi e
59 laici, tutti martiri dal 1745 al 1862, erano stati beatificati in
precedenza, in diversi gruppi negli anni 1990, 1906, 1909 e 1951.
Tra i 50 sacerdoti, vi è
il terziario domenicano sacerdote del Tonchino, Khuong a cui era stato aggiunto
il nome cristiano di Tommaso; nacque verso il 1780 da una nobile famiglia
tonchinese, forse figlio di un mandarino.
Cristiano sin da piccolo,
poi sacerdote, subì per questo il carcere durante la grande persecuzione
dell’imperatore Minh-Manh, ottenendo la libertà solo per la sua nobile origine.
Da allora visse in clandestinità in un luogo sicuro, espletando il suo
ministero sacerdotale nello spirito domenicano; aveva quasi 80 anni, quando il
29 dicembre 1859, venne catturato a Tran-Xa, durante la nuova persecuzione
anticristiana indetta da re Tu-Duc.
Egli in quei giorni aveva
lasciato il suo rifugio per trasferirsi altrove, quando giunto davanti al ponte
di Tran-Xa, venne riconosciuto come cristiano, tradito dalla sua esitazione ad
attraversarlo per non calpestare la croce, messa lì a terra dai persecutori.
Arrestato e condotto
davanti al giudice, fu sottoposto ad intenso interrogatorio, per trovare nelle
sue parole qualche dichiarazione, comprovante pretese relazioni tra i cristiani
locali e gli europei; fu invitato a convincere i suoi correligionari ad
apostatare e calpestare la croce; a questo punto padre Tommaso Khuong,
dichiarandosi cristiano sin da fanciullo e sacerdote di Cristo, rifiutò
sdegnato, dicendosi pronto a morire, anche centomila volte per la sua amata
religione.
Venne condannato a morte
e un mese dopo, il 30 gennaio 1860, genuflesso davanti ad una piccola croce di
canne, che aveva portato con sé, nell’atto di venerarla venne decapitato.
Fu beatificato insieme ad
altri 24 martiri il 29 aprile 1951 da papa Pio XII. La sua festa religiosa è
rimasta dopo la canonizzazione al 30 gennaio.
