Le martyrologe romain fait aujourd’hui mémoire de saint David Galvan Bermudes, prêtre mexicain et martyr (1881-1915), cordonnier et ardent défenseur du mariage.
Ce prêtre mexicain était
né à Guadalajara le 29 janvier 1881. Devenu professeur au séminaire de
Guadalajara, il aura aussi le souci des pauvres et des ouvriers. Et comme il
avait appris de son père le métier de cordonnier, et il aidera tout
particulièrement les cordonniers de la ville.
Il était aussi un ardent
défenseur de la sainteté du mariage chrétien. C'est pour cette raison qu'il
viendra en aide à une jeune fille qui rejetait les avances d'un militaire.
Celui-ci disait en effet vouloir épouser la jeune fille, mais il était en fait
déjà marié.
Le lieutenant en question
en fut irrité. Il en gardera de la rancœur envers le P. Galvan. Celui-ci
tombera sous ses balles.
En effet, le 30 janvier
1915, le P. Galvan apportait son soutien spirituel aux soldats blessés au cours
d'une bataille, à Guadalajara. C'est là qu'il fut fait prisonnier et sur le
champ condamné à mort. Il avait 34 ans.
"Nous n'avons pas eu
de petit-déjeuner", faisait remarquer un compagnon d'infortune.
"Aujourd'hui, nous prendrons notre repas avec Dieu", répondit le P.
Galvan.
Il a été canonisé par
Jean-Paul II à Rome l’année du Jubilé de l’Incarnation, le 21 mai 2000.

Entered the seminary in
Guadalajara, Mexico at
age 14. An excellent student.
Questioning his vocation, David left the seminary for
three years. He worked, dated, wasted his time, and lived a dissolute
lifestyle; at one point he was arrested for
hitting his girlfriend while he was drunk. However, he finally realized he
could not ignore the call to his vocation. After a year’s probation, he was
allowed to return to the seminary. Ordained on 20 May 1909. Seminary instructor at
Amatitán. Supervisor at the Amatitán seminary.
Arrested at
least one for the crime of priesthood.
During periods of armed rebellion, he went into the field of fire to work with
the injured, patching wounds and hearing confessions.
On his way to Guadalajara to help victims of armed street fighting, he
was arrested with Father Jose
Araíza, who was later ransomed out of prison. Murdered for
being a priest,
and on the chance that he might be helping the rebels. Comforted fellow prisoners and
heard confessions in
the hours before execution. Martyr.

His life
+ David was born in
Guadalajara, Mexico, and entered seminary in that city at the age of 14.
+ He left the seminary
for a period of three years and spent that time working and dating, living, it
would seem, a fairly dissolute life. At one point, he was arrested for hitting
his girlfriend while drunk.
+ Realizing that the
priesthood was, in fact, his true vocation, he entered a period of probation
and was allowed to return to seminary. He was ordained on May 20, 1909. He
later served as a teacher and superior of the seminary in Amatitán.
+ During a period of
anti-Catholic and anti-clerical sentiment, he was arrested for the “crime” of
being a priest. After his release, he provided pastoral care for those who were
injured in the violence, hearing confessions and binding the wounds of the injured.
+ As he was making his
way to Guadalajara to help victims of street fighting there, he was arrested
with another priest (who was later ransomed). Father David was shot by a firing
squad on January 30, 1915.
+ Saint David
Galván-Beremúdez was among a group of Mexican martyrs canonized in 2000.

il 29 gennaio 1881. Professore nel Seminario di Guadalajara. La sua grande
carità verso i poveri ed i lavoratori lo spinsero ad organizzare ed aiutare il
gruppo dei calzolai, lavoro che effettuó a fianco del padre. Strenuo difensore
della santità del matrimonio aiutò una ragazza perseguitata da un militare,
che, già coniugato, desiderava contrarre matrimonio con lei. Questo fatto
procurò al padre Galván l`inimicizia del tenente che, alla fine, divenne il suo
giustiziere. Il 30 gennaio 1915 mentre cercava di aiutare spiritualmente i
soldati feriti in un combattimento avvenuto a Guadalajara, fu fatto
prigioniero. E, di fronte a coloro che erano incaricati di giustiziarlo, mostrò
il petto per ricevere le pallottole.

David Galván Bermúdez nacque a Guadalajara, in Messico, il 29 gennaio 1881. Fu un sacerdote cattolico, professore di teologia e cappellano militare. È stato beatificato da papa Giovanni Paolo II nel 1993 e canonizzato da papa Francesco nel 2023.
Galván era un uomo di grande carità e compassione. Si dedicò alla cura dei poveri e dei lavoratori, e fu un forte difensore della santità del matrimonio. Nel 1914, aiutò una ragazza che era perseguitata da un militare, che era già sposato e voleva sposarla. Questo atto gli procurò l'inimicizia del tenente, che alla fine lo fece giustiziare.
Il 30 gennaio 1915, mentre Galván cercava di aiutare spiritualmente i soldati feriti in un combattimento avvenuto a Guadalajara, fu fatto prigioniero. Fu portato davanti al tenente che lo odiava, e gli fu ordinato di rinunciare alla sua fede. Galván rifiutò, e fu quindi condannato a morte.
Galván si diresse verso il luogo dell'esecuzione con coraggio e umiltà. Quando fu arrivato, mostrò il petto ai suoi assassini, dicendo: "Sono pronto". Fu ucciso con un colpo di pistola al cuore.

ya casado pretendía contraer matrimonio con ella. Esto acarreó al padre Galván
la enemistad del teniente que, al final, se convirtió en su verdugo. El 30 de
enero de 1915, por auxiliar espiritualmente a los soldados heridos en un
combate efectuado en Guadalajara, fue tomado prisionero. En espera de la
ejecución su compañero de prisión le comentó que no había desayunado, y el
padre Galván tranquilamente le dijo: «Hoy vamos a ir a comer con Dios». Y,
frente a los encargados de ejecutarlo, se señaló serenamente el pecho para
recibir las balas.

DAVID GALVÁN BERMUDES
Nació en Guadalajara el
29 de enero de 1881; hijo de José Trinidad Galván y Mariana Bermúdez,
quien murió cuando su hijo tenía tres años de edad. Su familia era muy pobre,
por lo que ayudó a su padre en un modesto taller de zapatería.
En 1895 ingresó al
Seminario del Señor San José, mismo que abandonó después de cinco años. Durante
el tiempo que estuvo fuera, su estilo de vida descendía más y más, y al darse
cuenta de ello, a los 21 años de edad pidió ser readmitido en el Seminario.
El prefecto general
Miguel de la Mora lo sometió durante un año a pruebas rigurosas.
Poco a poco el cambio fue
evidente, ya no era agreste y altanero, por el contrario, edificaba su aprecio
y dedicación a la oración mental y su constancia en soportar la adversidad. Las
aficiones mundanas que antes le seducían, dejaron de dominarlo.
Finalmente logró su
ordenación como presbítero a los 28 años de edad, el 20 de mayo de 1909; poco
después se le confirmó como superior del mismo Seminario.
Su gran caridad para con
los pobres y los trabajadores le hizo organizar y ayudar al gremio de los
zapateros.
Su labor en el Seminario,
sin embargo, se vio interrumpida luego de que el Arzobispo de Guadalajara,
Francisco Orozco y Jiménez, disolvió el Seminario a raíz de la detención de 120
clérigos.
Defensor de la santidad
del matrimonio, ayudó a una jovencita que era perseguida por el militar Enrique
Vera, negándole que contrajera nupcias porque ya estaba casado. Esto acarreó al
padre Galván la enemistad del teniente, quien se convirtió en su verdugo.
Cuando el Padre Galván
fue nombrado Vicario de Amátitán, fue aprehendido por órdenes del capitán
Enrique Vera, antiguo condiscípulo suyo, personaje de escasa moralidad y
profundos resentimientos contra el sacerdote por el impedimento de matrimonio. El
arresto carecía de sustento, razón por la cual el Padre David recuperó su
libertad.
El sábado 30 de enero de
1915, se registraron en la ciudad violentos enfrentamientos entre hueste
villistas y carrancistas; los presbíteros David Galván y José María Araiza, se
dispusieron a auxiliar a los moribundos y heridos. Cuando cruzaban el jardín botánico,
frente al viejo Hospital de San Miguel, fueron interceptados por Enrique Vera,
quien ordenó su arresto inmediato.
Los carrancistas del 37
Regimiento ligero de línea pusieron a los sacerdotes a disposición de las
autoridades militares; las legislaciones de Vera arrancaron, sin juicio previo,
la pena de muerte. No obstante, un oportuno indulto salvó la vida del Padre
Araiza; no corrió la misma suerte su compañero, remitido a la calle Coronel
Calderón, junto a la banda del Cementerio de Belén.
Frente al pelotón de
fusilamiento y sin perder la entereza, la víctima distribuyó los objetos de
valor que portaba. No quiso que le vendaran los ojos y frente a los encargados
de ejecutarlo, se señalo serenamente el pecho para recibir las balas; sus
últimas palabras fueron para sus verdugos: "Les perdono lo que ahora van a
hacer conmigo".
En junio de 1922 los
restos del Padre David Galván fueron depositados en un templo en construcción,
próximo al lugar del martirio, la actual Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario,
en el barrio del Retiro.
