St. Duthac of Ross,
Bishop
8 MARCH
Died 1065. An Irishman by
birth, St. Duthac became bishop of Ross in Scotland, where his memory is
preserved in several place names, e.g., Kilduthie (Benedictines).
There is a ruined chapel in Tain in Easter Ross which is believed to have been
built over the place of Duthac's birth. He was of a good Scottish family but
went to Ireland for his education returning to his native land as a Bishop,
working in the districts of Moray and Ross. An Irish chronicler describes him
as "Primus anamchara, praecipius confessarius", first among soul
friends and chief among confessors, and he is honoured for his devotion to
hearing confessions and giving spiritual direction to his people.
Bishop Elphinstone who was Bishop of Ross before going to Aberdeen is
responsible for adding a number of stories about the saint to the Aberdeen
Breviary. When he was quite young his mother sent him to the smithy to ask for
coals as the fire in their house had gone out. The smith scornfully threw a
shovel full of coals at the boy who calmly gathered up the glowing embers in
his apron and carried them home without suffering any harm.
Once when he was dining with a noble a drunken guest ordered one of Duttac's
disciples to take a gold ring and a lump of meat to his house. While the young
man was on this errand he stopped at a churchyard to pray for the dead and a
kite flew down and took the ring and the meat from the tombstone on which they
had been laid. When Duthac was told of this calamity he prayed to God and the
bird flew down to the saint and deposited the stolen articles at his fleet. The
ring was restored to the young man but the kite was allowed to consume the meat
as a reward for his obedience.
There is another story concerning meat, this time it is about a portion of meat
sent by a Canon of Dornoch to the Bishop. He had just killed an ox and
dispatched a piece as a present, the bearer being guided by a light like a lamp
going before him so that Duthac received the gift the next day still fresh.
When he died in 1065 he was buried at Tain which is called in the Gaelic Baile
Duich, Cuthac's Town, and his tomb became a place of pilgrimage, James IV
making three visits. Among his relics were his bell and a shirt which was
believed to give the wearer miraculous protection. He has a holy well at
Cromarty (Barrett, Forbes, Towill).

Calendar
of Scottish Saints – Saint Duthac, Bishop, A.D. 1068
Article
8
March. This saint was of Scottish birth, but was educated, like many of his
contemporaries, in Ireland. Returning to his native land, he was consecrated
bishop, and devoted himself with zeal to the pastoral office. He is said to
have especially shown this devotion in hearing the confessions of his people.
He laboured as bishop in the districts of Moray and Ross. Both during life and
after death he was noted for many miracles. He was buried in the church of
Tain, whose Gaelic title is Baile Dhuich (Duthac’s Town). Seven years after
death his body was found incorrupt, and was removed to a more honourable shrine
in the same church. His resting-place became one of the chief places of
pilgrimage in the country. James IV visited it no less than three times, travelling
thither with a large retinue. At that date Saint Duthac’s Bell was treasured at
Tain. Saint Duthac is patron of Kilduich, at the head of Loch Duich in Kintail.
The saint probably visited this spot, which belonged to his pastoral charge.
Kilduthie, near the Loch of Leys, Kincardineshire, and Arduthie, near
Stonehaven, in the same county, both take their names from this saint. A chapel
in the Benedictine Abbey of Arbroath bore the dedication of Saint Duthac. Two
fairs called after him were held annually at Tain – “Saint Duthac in Lent” was
on his feast-day; that in December probably indicated some translation of his
relics. At Tain is Saint Duthac’s Cairn. A holy well bears his name in the
parish of Cromarty. Leo XIII restored his feast in 1898.

March 8
St. Duthak, Bishop of
Ross, in Scotland, Confessor
HIS zeal and labours
in preaching the word of God, his contempt of himself, his compassion for the
poor and for sinners, his extreme love of poverty, never reserving anything for
himself, and the extraordinary austerity of his life, to which he had innured himself
from his childhood, are much extolled by the author of his life. The same
writer assures us, that he was famous for several miracles and predictions, and
that he foretold an invasion of the Danes, which happened ten years after his
death, in 1263, in the reign of Alexander III. when with their king Achol, they
were defeated by Alexander Stuart, great grandfather to Robert, the first king
of that family. This victory was ascribed to the intercession of Saint Andrew
and Saint Duthak. Our saint, after longing desires of being united to God,
passed joyfully to bliss, in 1253. His relics, kept in the collegiate church of
Thane, in the county of Ross, were resorted to by pilgrims from all parts of
Scotland. Lesley, the pious bishop of Ross, (who, after remaining four years in
prison with Queen Mary, passed into France, was chosen suffragan of Rouen, by
Cardinal Bourbon, and died at Brussels, in 1591,) had an extraordinary devotion
to this saint, the chief patron of his diocess. See Lesley, Descript. Scot. p.
27. and the MS. life of St. Duthak, compiled by a Scottish Jesuit, nephew by
the mother to Bishop Lesley, and native of that diocess. See also King in

San Duthac di Ross Vescovo
Festa: 8 marzo
† 8 marzo 1050 circa
Aberdeen, dove attirano ancora oggi pellegrini e devoti. La sua memoria è inoltre
preservata in vari toponimi scozzesi, come Kilduthie, Arduthie e Kilduich.

Mannen fikk ringen
tilbake, men Duthac lot glenten spise svinekjøttet som belønning for sin
lydighet.
høyest ærede i landet Ross».
hellig kilde i Cromarty.
8. mars. Den feires i bispedømmet Aberdeen. Det finnes dedikasjoner i Arbroath,
Kilduich og Kilduthie.
