Gaubert ou Waldebert
Seigneur de la cour du roi Dagobert, il se retira dans une grotte (L'ermitage de Saint Valbert, GoogleMaps) près du monastère de Luxeuil - abbaye Saint-Colomban (diocèse de Besançon*), abbaye fondée au VIe siècle par saint Colomban; à la mort de saint Eustase, une délégation de moines vint le chercher pour devenir son successeur: il devint leur troisième abbé, et eut, entre autres, pour frères saint Romaric et saint Aimé.
(Abbé de Luxeuil (+ 665) qui fut le troisième abbé de Luxeuil dans l'Est de la France. Il avait été élève et compagnon de saint Colomban et c'est sous son abbatiat que le monastère prit une grande indépendance spirituelle et temporelle. L'abbaye devint même trop importante, sans doute près de 600 moines, ce qui embarrassait parfois le saint abbé Gaubert. Mais il sut y faire face avec patience, douceur et fermeté.)
Ce monastère était très influent, et c'est ainsi que Valbert put aider sainte Salaberge à fonder elle-même un monastère à Laon.
Un village qui perpétue son nom s'est développé au cours des siècles à l'emplacement de son ermitage : Saint Valbert, en Haute-Saône.

À Luxeuil en Bourgogne, vers 665, saint Gaubert (Waldebert), abbé. De soldat,
il se fit moine sous la direction de saint Eustase, à qui il succéda, et au
cours des quarante années de sa charge, il introduisit doucement dans son
monastère la Règle de saint Benoît.

(also known as Walbert,
Gaubert) Died c.665-668. Saint Waldebert was a Frankish knight, who found more
nobility in serving God than in service to an earthly king in the army. He
became a monk at Luxeuil and donated all his wealth to the monastery. He was
permitted to live as a hermit under the rule of the abbey until the death of
Saint Eustace, when he was elected to be its third abbot. About two years after
becoming abbot in 628, he introduced the Benedictine Rule. During his
forty-year abbacy, the monastery, founded by Saint Columbanus, reached the peak
of its religious and cultural influence. He secured from Pope John IV the
abbey’s freedom from episcopal control. Waldebert also helped Saint Salaberga
found her great convent at Laon (Attwater2, Benedictines, Coulson, Delaney).

Benedictine abbot,
sometimes listed as Walbert and Gaubert. Born a Frankish nobleman, he gave up
the aristocratic and military life to
enter the monastery of Luxeuil, France. There he lived as a hermit for a time,
but after the death of Abbot St. Eustace he
was elected abbot in
628. As head of the monastery for some forty years, he was responsible for
ending adherence to the rule of St. Columban and
instituting the rule of St. Benedict. He also won freedom for the community
from episcopal jurisdiction, promoted a generous building program, and brought
Luxeuil to the height of its influence and glory in
the West. Waldebert also helped St. Salaberga to
found her famed convent at
Laon.

668 Among the successors of St. Columban in
the monastery of Luxeuil the most famous during his life and
the most revered after his death was Waldebert, the third abbot.This is partly
due to the fact that his long rule coincided with the most glorious period of
the abbey's history and partly to the numerous miracles attributed to the
saint. Objects he had touched notably his wooden drinking bowl were long
venerated for their healing properties and in the tenth century Anso a Luxeuil monk wrote
a book about the wonders of the sant.He was an young Frankish nobleman. When
asked admittance to the abbey he
laid aside his weapons to receive the habit ahey
were suspended form the
roof of the chuirch where they remained for centuries.

Nato in Francia intorno
al 595 da nobile famiglia, Valdeberto abbracciò la vita monastica a Luxeuil,
dove si distinse per fervore religioso e umiltà. Attratto dalla contemplazione,
ottenne di ritirarsi in un eremo, divenendo noto per la sua santità e i suoi
miracoli. Eletto abate nel 629, guidò Luxeuil con saggezza, promuovendo la
disciplina e la formazione dei monaci. Fervente difensore della Regola di San
Colombano, si batté per l'autonomia dei monasteri e l'unità della Chiesa. Morto
tra il 665 e il 670, Valdeberto è venerato come santo il 2 maggio e le sue
spoglie riposano a Luxeuil, oggetto di devozione per la sua esemplare santità.

Le informazioni sulla
nascita e la giovinezza di Valdeberto sono scarse e frammentarie. La tradizione
lo indica come un giovane di stirpe nobile, nato in Francia intorno al 595.
Attratto dalla vita monastica, si unì alla comunità di Luxeuil, un monastero di
grande prestigio fondato da San Colombano.
Vita monastica e ascesi
A Luxeuil, Valdeberto si distinse per il suo fervore religioso e per la sua
dedizione alla vita ascetica. Il suo comportamento esemplare e la sua profonda
umiltà lo fecero ben presto apprezzare dai suoi confratelli. Sotto la guida di
abili maestri, egli approfondì la conoscenza della Scrittura e della tradizione
patristica, nutrendo il suo animo con la preghiera e la meditazione.
Eremo e fama di taumaturgo
Il desiderio di una vita ancora più solitaria e contemplativa spinse Valdeberto
a chiedere il permesso di stabilirsi in un eremitaggio situato a circa cinque
chilometri dal monastero. In questo luogo appartato, egli si dedicò con
rinnovato ardore alla preghiera e alla penitenza. La fama della sua santità e
dei suoi miracoli si diffuse rapidamente, attirando a lui molti fedeli che
cercavano la sua guida e il suo conforto.
Abate di Luxeuil
Alla morte dell'abate Eustasio, nel 629, Valdeberto fu eletto a guidare la
comunità di Luxeuil. Sotto il suo saggio governo, il monastero conobbe un
periodo di grande prosperità e rinnovamento spirituale. Valdeberto si distinse
come abile amministratore e zelante pastore, promuovendo la disciplina
monastica e la formazione dei suoi confratelli.
Difensore della Regola di San Colombano
Valdeberto si dimostrò un fervente difensore della Regola di San Colombano, che
prevedeva una rigorosa disciplina monastica e una forte autonomia dei monasteri
rispetto all'autorità episcopale. In un'epoca di contrasti e di tensioni tra la
Chiesa irlandese e quella romana, Valdeberto si adoperò per mantenere l'unità
della Chiesa e per difendere l'eredità spirituale di San Colombano.
Morte e culto
Valdeberto morì tra il 665 e il 670, compianto dai suoi confratelli e dai fedeli che lo veneravano come un santo. Le sue spoglie furono inumate nella cripta della chiesa di San Martino a Luxeuil, dove ancora oggi sono oggetto di devozione. La sua memoria liturgica è celebrata il 2 maggio.
