Née dans le Frioul en
Italie, elle entra dans le Tiers Ordre de Saint Dominique et se sanctifia ainsi
sans entrer dans un couvent. Ses contemporains l'ont dotée de toutes les
vertus, mais «on se demande quand elle eut le temps de les mettre en œuvre
tellement son biographe nous la montre occupée à faire sans cesse des
miracles.» (Englebert) Elle voulait imiter les souffrances du Christ. Un cilice
ne lui suffisant pas, elle serra autour de sa taille une corde qui, peu à peu,
lui entra dans la chair. Elle en tomba malade, couverte d'ulcères douloureux.
Le pape Clément XII la béatifia en 1763, ratifiant ainsi le culte que le peuple
lui rendait.
À Cividale dans le
Frioul, en 1292, la bienheureuse Bienvenue Boiani, vierge, sœur de la Pénitence
de Saint-Dominique, qui se donna tout entière à la prière et aux austérités.

Tertiaire dominicaine au
13e siècle. Son père, après avoir eu six filles, apprit qu'il en avait eu une
septième. Il s'écria alors qu'elle serait tout de même la bienvenue et lui
donna ce nom.
Elle se mortifiait
beaucoup. Les nuits de fête, pour ne pas dormir, elle se mettait un peu de
vinaigre dans le coin de l'oeil. Les nuits de réveillon, elle se donnait la
discipline par trois fois avec des chaînes en fer. Un jour, le démon se glissa
contre elle de tout son long sous la forme d'un serpent. Elle n'hésita pas à le
prendre à pleine main et à le massacrer contre le mur. Puis elle tomba malade
pendant cinq ans. L'ange Gabriel lui apportait des nourritures mystérieuses.
Comme elle souffrait de ne pas pouvoir aller à l'église, une des soeurs la
portait sur son dos au moins une fois par semaine.
Elle finit par guérir en
se rendant au tombeau de saint Dominique à Bologne.
Une des soeurs qui
s'appelait Marguerite ne pouvait supporter le fromage. Bienvenue en prit un
morceau, fit un signe de croix dessus et le tendit à Marguerite qui, dès lors,
en mangea volontiers.
Bienvenue mourut le 30
octobre 1292. Deux siècles plus tard, on ne retrouva plus son corps.

Bienvenus Bojani était née dans le Frioul italien en 1254, elle voulut revivre
les souffrances du Christ et multiplia les mortifications et les supplices… au
point que les autorités religieuses l’obligèrent à devenir tertiaire de saint
Dominique, c'est-à-dire à mener une vie laïque mais en relation avec la
spiritualité de l’ordre.

her; it had to be removed, but was too embedded to be untied. She prayed over
it, and it fell to her feet.

she had to be carried to daily Mass.

with so many in our time. When the silence of the midwife proclaimed that her
father had been disappointed once again in his desire for a son, he exclaimed,
"She too shall be welcome!" Remembering this she was christened by
her parents Benvenuta ("welcome"), although they had asked for a son.
A vain older sister unsuccessfully tried to teach the pious little Benvenuta to
dress in rich clothing and use the deceits of society. Benvenuta hid from such
temptations in the church where she developed a tender devotion to the Blessed
Virgin. By the age of 12, Benvenuta was wearing hairshirts and a rope girdle.
As she grew the rope became embedded in her flesh. When she realized the rope
must be removed, she couldn't get it off, so she prayed and it fell to her
feet. For this reason she is often pictured in art holding a length of rope in
her hands.
Having become a Dominican
tertiary at an early age, she added the penances practiced by the sisters to
those she had appropriated for herself. All her disciplines, fasting, and lack
of sleep soon caused her health to fail and she was confined to bed for five
years. Thereafter, she was too weak to walk, so a kind older sibling carried
her to church once a week for Compline (Night Prayer) in the Dominican church,
her favorite liturgy after the Mass.
After evening prayer on
the Vigil of the Feast of Saint Dominic, Dominic and Saint Peter Martyr
appeared to Benvenuta. Dominic had a surprise for her. The prior was absent at
the Salve procession, but at the beginning of Compline she saw Dominic in the
prior's place. He passed from brother to brother giving the kiss of peace, then
went to his own altar and disappeared. At the Salve procession, the Blessed
Virgin herself came down the aisle, blessing the fathers while holding the
Infant Jesus in her arms.
Benvenuta spent her whole
life at home in Cividale busy with her domestic duties, praying, and working
miracles. She was often attacked by the devil, who sometimes left her close to
discouragement and exhaustion. When someone protested against the death of a
promising young child, Benvenuta commented, "It is much better to be young
in paradise than to be old in hell." The devil often appeared to her in
horrifying forms but was banished when Benvenuta called upon the Virgin.
Benvenuta's companions
called her "the sweetest and most spiritual of contemplatives, so lovable
in her holiness that her touch and presence inspired gladness and drove away
temptations." This is amazing in light of the severe penances that she
imposed upon herself--and another sign of blessedness that she didn't judge
others by her standards for herself (Benedictines, Dorcy).

“Let her be welcome!”
(benvenuta) said her father on learning of her birth, although he had only
daughters and desired a son; and from this arose the infant’s name. From her
earliest years her father’s garden was her privileged abode. She chose it
because from there she could contemplate afar off upon a mountain a sanctuary
of Mary, and there she could give free vent to her Spirit of prayer and penance
by a great number of prostrations and genuflections. Admitted into the Third
Order she gave herself up to rigorous corporal mortifications and in
consequence fell seriously ill. An oppression on her chest, a continual
trembling in all her limbs, an invincible repugnance for food, impossibility of
movement, most grievous sores – all combined to make her life an absolute
martyrdom. To give her some consolation they had to carry her to church at the
time of Mass, or for the “Salve,” sometimes in the arms of her neighbors or
upon her sister’s shoulders, while the passers-by laughed to see her. After
five years of suffering she was cured by making a vow to go and visit the tomb
of Saint Dominic at Bologna. Then she resumed her penitential life which was
only surpassed by her humility. Her death was less the result of her
mortifications than her desire to see Him Who had so often instructed and
favored her in prayer. (1292)

Benvenuta Boiani visse a
Cividale, dove era nata nel 1255, ed entrò ancor giovane nel terz’ordine secolare
domenicano. Nel suo itinerario di esperienza ascetica, di contemplazione e di
solitudine superò tentazioni e prove di ogni genere. Guarita da una grave
malattia, visitò la tomba di S. Domenico a Bologna. Restò in famiglia, vivendo
appartata e umile fino alla morte, avvenuta il 30 ottobre 1292. Fu sepolta
nella chiesa di S. Domenico a Cividale. Il culto, di origine popolare, fu
riconosciuto nel 1765 da Clemente XIII che la proclamò beata e permise
all’ordine domenicano di celebrarne la festa, che in seguito si diffuse in
diocesi.

San Domenico, che si consacrò totalmente alla preghiera e a una vita di
mortificazione.
Il babbo di Benvenuta,
che dopo sei figlie aspettava con impazienza un maschio, seppe far buon viso
alla settima arrivata, e da quell’ottimo cristiano che era esclamò: “Sia
anch’essa la benvenuta!” decidendo che si chiamasse, per questo suo atto di
fede, Benvenuta. In seguito questo buon padre dovette rallegrarsi sempre più
della sua cara figlia, che davvero fu una benedizione, tanto da apparire subito
di appartenere più al cielo che alla terra. Nessuna cosa passeggera l’attraeva,
e le sorelle non riuscirono mai a piegarla alle vanità mondane. Guidata solo
dal suo fervore, e dalla inesperienza della sua giovinezza, si dette a
penitenze inaudite. Le apparve allora il Santo Padre Domenico, rimproverandola
severamente di si indiscreti rigori e ingiungendole ripetutamente di mettersi
per la via regale della santa ubbidienza. Le indicò lui stesso il santo
Domenicano a cui doveva rivolgersi, il quale la diresse per tutta la vita.
Ricevuto l’Abito del Terz’Ordine imitò nelle veglie e nei digiuni i religiosi
dell’Ordine. Ammalatasi gravemente, forse in seguito a tante penitenze, dopo
cinque anni di spasimi fu miracolosamente guarita dal glorioso Patriarca
Domenico. I pochi anni che le restarono furono tutti spesi nella contemplazione
e nel sacrificio completo di sé. Fu tormentata in tutti i modi dal diavolo, ma
godette anche di celesti favori. Molte furono le apparizioni della Madonna,
belle e sempre ricche di simboli. Ai confratelli e alle sorelle del
Terz’Ordine, e soprattutto al popolo, la sua breve vita fu luce ed esempio
mirabili. Morì a trentotto anni, nel 1292, nel suo paese natale di Cividale.
Sepolta nella chiesa locale dei Domenicani, il suo corpo non è stato poi più
trovato. Papa Clemente XIII il 6 febbraio 1765 ha confermato il culto e il
titolo di Beata.

Il 4 maggio 1254, Corrado Bojani, nobile signore di Cividale del Friuli, attendeva la nascita della sua settima creatura e sperava ardentemente che fosse un figlio maschio, dato che già sei figlie rallegravano la sua casa. I familiari quasi non osavano partecipargli la notizia che era venuta alla luce la settima bimba, temendo di dargli una troppo forte delusione, ma egli, quando ne fu informato, esclamò semplicemente: «Sia anch'essa la benvenuta». Da questa esclamazione, secondo la tradizione, derivò alla piccola il nome di Benvenuta, nome del resto che era già presente tra le antenate della famiglia Bojani. Arrivarono in seguito, anche i figli maschi e così fu continuata la discendenza e il nome della famiglia, come aveva desiderato Corrado. Benvenuta fu teneramente amata e protetta dai suoi per tutto il corso dei suoi 38 anni: soffrì molto per le infermità fisiche e per le lotte coi demoni, ma ebbe sempre il consenso e l'aiuto dei parenti nel condurre quella vita singolare, fatta di lunghe orazioni, di penitenze estenuanti, di veglie, di frequenti estasi che le rendevano impossibile occuparsi d'altro.
Sin dalla più tenera età la fanciulla, attratta dalla preghiera e dalla solitudine, iniziò quella vita ascetica che l'avrebbe condotta alle vette della santità. In modo particolare si consacrò alla Beata Vergine Maria e le manifestò il suo profondo amore ripetendo instancabilmente l'Ave Maria, che consisteva in quel tempo soltanto della salutazione angelica: ancor prima dei sette anni aveva l'abitudine di ripetere mille volte al giorno le parole dell'angelo Gabriele, accompagnandole con genuflessioni e profonde inclinazioni.
Tale devozione continuò poi nel tempo e in quei luoghi ne rimase l'uso lungo i secoli, soprattutto quando si voleva ottenere dalla Vergine una grazia particolare.
Per dedicarsi, senza essere disturbata, alle sue pratiche di pietà Benvenuta si era costruita in fondo al giardino della casa un piccolo eremitaggio in cui, nascosta dall'erba alta, era libera di rivolgere il suo sguardo pieno d'amore alla Vergine venerata nel vicino santuario della Madonna del Monte. A dodici anni si consacrò a Dio emettendo il voto di castità: forse fu questa l'occasione in cui entrò a far parte del Terz'Ordine domenicano, benché non ci sia uno scritto che documenti la data della sua entrata, mentre ne viene attestata la morte nel necrologio del convento dei Domenicani di Cividale, in cui accanto al nome di Benvenuta si legge un laconico ma eloquente elogio funebre: « Visse devotamente nello spirito».
Consacratasi a Dio, la giovinetta s'impegnò nella via di una penitenza straordinaria, cercando di praticare digiuni, astinenze, flagellazioni notturne, senza troppo attirare l'attenzione dei suoi familiari. Nemmeno al suo confessore ella fece conoscere le mortificazioni straordinarie alle quali si costringeva, finché non si trovò in serio pericolo per una corda che le era penetrata nei fianchi, producendo delle piaghe intollerabili. Non volendo, ricorrere a mezzi umani che palesassero la sua penitenza, si rivolse con fede a Dio perché la liberasse e ad un tratto vide la corda intatta per terra, ai suoi piedi. Dopo questo episodio le apparve il S. Padre Domenico, ordinandole di rivelare tutta la sua vita al confessore.
Benvenuta, non senza grande sforzo, ubbidì e il confessore le proibì l'uso di simili strumenti di penitenza. La sua salute però era ormai compromessa: per cinque anni restò pressoché immobile, incapace di qualsiasi movimento, martirizzata dall'asma e da un forte tremito nelle mani. Fu inoltre tormentata dagli assalti dei demoni che la vessavano con continue tentazioni per farla cadere nella disperazione, le turbavano la preghiera con bestemmie e canti osceni, la colpivano con battiture nel corpo: sempre ne uscì vittoriosa invocando la Beata Vergine Maria con estrema fiducia.
In questo periodo di totale dipendenza fisica dall'aiuto altrui, la sua pena maggiore era il non poter partecipare alla S. Messa e al canto della Salve Regina, dopo Compieta, nella chiesa di S. Domenico. Sua sorella Maria, per farla felice, aiutata anche da qualche vicina generosa, si offrì di trasportarla a spalla fino alla chiesa, almeno ogni domenica. Benvenuta, consapevole di tanta fatica, dopo un po' pensò che fosse egoismo accettare un tale servizio e pregò la Madonna di guarirla, facendo voto, in caso fosse esaudita, di andare a piedi alla tomba di S. Domenico a Bologna. Ricevette la guarigione nella chiesa stessa, alla presenza di tutto il popolo, nel giorno dell'Annunciazione, festa da lei prediletta. Subito dopo si mise in cammino verso Bologna per adempiere il suo voto, accompagnata dalla sorella Maria: passò per Venezia e per Padova e potè incontrare il P. Corrado, spesso assente da Cividale per incarichi dell'Ordine, il quale ottenne dalla figlia spirituale la rivelazione di tutte le grazie celesti di cui era stata favorita.
Ritornata in famiglia, riprese la consueta vita di contemplazione, di visioni, di penitenze. Frequentò per lunghi periodi il monastero della Cella, del second'Ordine di San Domenico, senza tuttavia entrare mai a far parte della comunità.
La vita di Benvenuta fu essenzialmente contemplativa, anche vivendo in famiglia: quanti la circondavano, conoscendo le comunicazioni soprannaturali di cui era favorita, si stimavano felici di sollevarla dalle quotidiane necessità della vita materiale. Le sue estasi avevano quasi sempre in carattere di allegrezza: viveva, per così dire, immersa nei misteri gaudiosi. L'autore del primo manoscritto sulla sua vita, ci racconta che una sola volta, nella Settimana Santa, Benvenuta visse i dolori e le angosce del suo Salvatore, ma che al giungere della Pasqua ebbe una moltiplicata effusione di celeste felicità. Una volta, a Natale, ottenne dalla Beata Vergine di tenere fra le braccia per un tempo prolungato il Divino Neonato e in altra occasione nella chiesa vicina alla sua casa, le fu dato incontrare un bimbo che si rivelò essere il piccolo Gesù. Ricevette dalla Vergine Maria anche la promessa che sarebbe uscita vittoriosa nella lotta terribile che i demoni avrebbero scatenato contro di lei nell'imminenza della sua morte. Infatti, ammalatasi gravemente e giunta in fin di vita, l'astuto nemico la turbò profondamente insinuando in lei la tremenda persuasione che tutte le sue penitenze e preghiere erano state ispirate da intimo orgoglio e che perciò era abbandonata da Dio e condannata all'inferno.
I presenti capirono, dal cambiamento del suo viso, che qualcosa di tremendamente
angoscioso lacerava la sua anima: dalle sue labbra usciva ininterrottamente
una sola invocazione: « Maria, Maria! ».
Quel nome mise in fuga il nemico ed ella spirò nella pace celeste, il 30
ottobre
1292.
Fu sepolta nella chiesa di San Domenico e subito furono numerose le guarigioni
ottenute per sua intercessione. Nei primi tempi una splendida luce, di origine
inspiegabile, segnalava a volte nella notte il luogo della sua tomba oppure
sovrastava l’intera chiesa. Tuttavia nel 1447, quando i Domenicani ottennero di
aprire la sua tomba, il suo corpo fu introvabile, nonostante ripetute ricerche.
Questo fatto non impedì che il suo culto si mantenesse vivo e papa Clemente
XIII, il 6 febbraio 1765, la dichiarò beata.

i Zuglio ved Cividale del Friuli i regionen Friuli-Venezia Giulia i
Nord-Italia. Hun var den yngste av de syv døtrene til Corrado Bojani og
Albertina da Buttinico, et velstående par med fornemme forbindelser. Det hevdes
at navnet kom fra hennes far, som etter seks døtre hadde ønsket seg en sønn,
men da han hørte at det var enda en jente, sa han: «Hun er uansett
velkommen (Benvenuta)».
Hun nektet å være med i noen
leker som smakte av verdslighet eller forfengelighet. En forfengelig eldre
søster forsøkte å lære den fromme lille Benvenuta å kle seg i flotte klær og
gjøre bruk av samfunnets bedrag, men hun flyktet fra slike fristelser inn i
kirken, hvor hun utviklet en øm hengivenhet til Jomfru Maria. Hun
pleide å repetere den korte Hill deg, Maria (det som i dag er første halvpart)
mange ganger i løpet av dagen.
Familien ser ut til å ha
vært svært religiøs, og de støttet henne i hennes fromhetsgjerninger og hennes
avgjørelse om å avlegge løfte om livslang kyskhet. Hun ble i tidlig alder
dominikanertertiar (Tertius Ordo Sancti Dominici – TOSD), men hun
synes å ha tilbrakt hele livet i sitt eget hjem i Cividale. Der var hun travelt
opptatt med sine huslige plikter, bønn og å utføre mirakler.
Hun ble mer trukket til
et kontemplativt liv enn til et aktivt åndelig liv. I tillegg til botsøvelsene
som ble praktisert av søstrene, la hun til sine egne. Noen ganger pisket hun
seg selv tre ganger om natten. Mens hun fortsatt var ung, bandt hun et tau
rundt midjen så hardt at det skar seg inn i kjøttet og forårsaket store
smerter. Det syntes som om det var nødvendig med en operasjon for å fjerne det,
men hun ba Gud om hjelp, og da skal tauet ha falt fra hennes kropp like helt.
All faste og mangel på
søvn fikk snart hennes helse til å svikte. Hennes skriftefar ga henne ordre om
å lette på sine botsøvelser og ikke praktisere noen nye uten hans tillatelse. I
fem år led hun av astma og var nesten fullstendig lammet og lenket til sengen.
I denne tiden var hun fristet til å gi opp håpet, spesielt fordi hun ikke kunne
overvære messen eller delta i avsyningen av Salve Regina i kompletoriet. Hun
skal ha blitt mirakuløst helbredet etter fem år på festen for Herrens bebudelse
etter å ha avlagt et løfte om å besøke graven til den hellige Dominikus i
Bologna hvis hun kom seg.
Likevel var hun for svak
til å gå, så en vennlig eldre kjødelig søster bar henne til kirken en gang i
uken til kompletorium i dominikanerkirken, som var hennes favorittliturgi etter
messen. Etter kveldsbønnen på vigilien for festen for Dominikus viste den
hellige seg for Benvenuta sammen med den hellige Peter av Verona (Petrus
Martyr). Prioren var fraværende i prosesjonen, men i begynnelse av kompletoriet
så hun Dominikus på priorens plass. Han gikk fra bror til bror og ga dem
fredskysset, deretter gikk han til sitt eget alter og forsvant. Til prosesjonen
kom Jomfru Maria selv ned midtgangen og velsignet patrene mens hun holdt
Jesusbarnet i armene.
Benvenuta ble ofte
angrepet av djevelen, slik at hun noen ganger ble både motløs og utslitt. Da
noen protesterte mot døden til et lovende ungt barn, sa Benvenuta: «Det er mye
bedre å være ung i paradiset enn gammel i helvete». Djevelen viste seg ofte for
henne i fryktelige former, men forsvant når Benvenuta ropte på Maria.
Da hun var døende, var
hun igjen fristet til å oppgi håpet, men til slutt døde hun fredfullt den 30.
oktober 1292 i Cividale. Hun ble gravlagt i kirken San Domenico, men hennes
nøyaktige gravsted kunne ikke finnes da man søkte etter det på 1400-tallet.
Kirken ble revet i 1807. Det ble snart meldt om mirakler på hennes forbønn, og
en folkelig kult utviklet seg raskt. Hun ble saligkåret den 6. februar 1765 ved
at hennes kult ble stadfestet av pave Klemens XIII (1758-69). Hennes minnedag
er dødsdagen 30. oktober. Dominikanerne feirer henne den 29. oktober.

Kobiece imię
włoskie Benvenuta utworzone jest od imienia męskiego Benvenuto (zob.
BENWENUT). W Polsce używane tylko w zakonach.
Święte, a raczej
błogosławione, które to imię nosiły, nie są liczne. Z dwóch zaledwie, któreśmy
napotkali w wykazach hagiograficznych, przedstawiamy tu jedną, ongiś dość
sławną:
Benwenuta Bojani. Urodziła
się w Cividale del Friuli (ongiś w państwie weneckim, dziś w prow. Udine,
płn. Włochy) dnia 4 maja 1255 r. Była siódmą córką włoskiego szlachcica.
Wcześnie zaczęła zdradzać skłonności do bogomyślności i umartwień. Te
ostatnie były w pewnym młodzieńczym okresie jej życia tak surowe
i nieumiarkowane, że przyprawiły ją o ciężką chorobę. Odzyskała
jednak zdrowie ślubując pielgrzymkę do grobu św. Dominika w Bolonii. Wcześnie
została też tercjarką dominikańską. Obdarzona nadzwyczajnymi darami, przeżywała
również okresy depresji i trwóg. Zmarła młodo, 29 lub 30 października 1292
r. Jej kult, żywy zwłaszcza w środowiskach dominikańskich, zatwierdził w r.
1765 Klemens XIII.
