Tous deux étaient soldats dans l'armée romaine et plutôt que de brûler l'encens devant la statue de l'empereur en signe d'allégeance militaire, ils préférèrent suivre le Christ. Ils furent livrés au martyre, à Rome, sur la via Nomentana.

Maur, soldats.

century) Roman soldiers who had been converted and baptised by Pope Saint Marcellus.
They were scourged to death about A.D. 303 under the Emperor Maximian,
and buried in
the Roman Catacombs.

always pictured as the Roman soldiers they were. They were martyred under
Maximian in Rome, where they are venerated (Benedictines, Roeder).

I santi Martiri Papia e
Mauro furono soldati al tempo dell'Imperatore Diocleziano. Alla prima
confessione di Cristo, Laodicio, Prefetto della città, fece percuotere loro la
bocca con sassi, poi li fece gettare in prigione, e quindi percuotere con
bastoni, e da ultimo con flagelli, finchè ne morirono.

Di questi santi martiri
di Roma – ricordati negli Itinerari del VII secolo come sepolti nel Coemeterium
Maius sulla via Nomentana – furono rinvenuti i resti nel 1590 in S. Adriano al
Foro e donati dal card. Agostino Cusano, titolare della chiesa, a S. Maria in
Vallicella, dove furono posti sotto l’altare maggiore il 23 maggio del 1599,
unitamente a quelli di Domitilla, Nereo e Achilleo; alcune reliquie furono
usate il 16 maggio del 1725 per la consacrazione dell’altare della cappella di
S. Filippo Neri, il quale con tanto fervore aveva accolto quei corpi santi che
giungevano processionalmente nella chiesa da lui costruita e ancora fresca di
calce. Si colloca in questo contesto di estatica preghiera, il buffo gesto di
Padre Filippo che, per distogliersi dall’estasi e nascondere il suo fervore,
iniziò a tirar le barbe delle guardie svizzere in servizio d’ordine sul
sagrato. La Congregazione dell’Oratorio li ha come Santi Patroni fin da quei
tempi.
